Baystate Mary Lane Hospital Recognized as Top Performer

WARE — Baystate Mary Lane Hospital was named one of the nation’s top performers on Quality Key Measures by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Honored as a hospital that consistently demonstrates excellent performance on evidence-based processes of health care, BMLH was recognized as a Top Performer for surgical and pneumonia care, one of six hospitals in the state so honored and among the top 14{06cf2b9696b159f874511d23dbc893eb1ac83014175ed30550cfff22781411e5} nationally.

“Excellence of care is something all patients expect and deserve, and it takes knowledge, teamwork, and the dedication of the entire hospital staff to achieve. We are extremely proud of this accomplishment,” said Joan Sullivan, president of Baystate Mary Lane Hospital and the Baystate Health Eastern Region.

“Using the most recent evidence-based treatments in caring for our patients with pneumonia leads to quicker recovery and a shorter hospital stay,” added Marna Mucha, director of Quality and Risk Management at the hospital.

“In our Emergency Department, the care of the patient with pneumonia begins prior to admission to ensure the most rapid and optimum recovery possible for our patients,” said Dr. Richard Gerstein, director of Emergency Services. “The successful treatment of pneumonia, as with many infectious diseases, relies on early detection and prompt treatment with the appropriate antibiotic. This treatment doesn’t stop with antibiotic administration, but includes culturing for the pathogen, oxygen therapy, influenza and pneumococcal immunization, and smoking-cessation counseling.”

According to Norma Berthiaume, manager of Surgical Services, “our surgical staff focuses on a proactive approach to quality patient care that includes communication and education. From the time the patient begins preparing for surgery through the time the patient is in recovery, our team emphasizes a family-centered approach to help ease any anxiety a patient may have.”

In addition, she said, “our care doesn’t end once the patient leaves our department. Post- operatively, we continue to follow our patient’s progress to ensure that they are comfortable and any new questions or concerns are addressed. We are proud to be nationally recognized for outstanding surgical expertise. This is a wonderful acknowledgment of the care we provide to our community.”
