Baystate Mary Lane Receives Grant from Country Bank

WARE — Country Bank was recently honored at Baystate Mary Lane Hospital for its $35,000 donation to the hospital’s Technology Fund, which supports the hospital’s efforts to further upgrade technology used in the treatment and diagnosis of patients.

“Country Bank has a long history of supporting the hospital’s fundraising activities, and has made a difference over the years in helping us to better provide for all our patients,” said Christine F. Shirtcliff, the hospital’s president. “Their continued interest and support of our local hospital is always greatly appreciated and affords us the ability to continue to keep both our equipment and facility up to the standard we have all come to expect from Baystate Mary Lane Hospital.”

This year, Country Bank’s donation allowed Mary Lane to upgrade surgical equipment used by orthopedic surgeon Dr. David Doctor, said Pam Wallace, RN, manager of Surgical Services.

“The new Gamma Nail System is made by the Stryker Corporation, which has been perfecting this product for the past 18 years,” she noted. “Quality is a major factor in treating all of our orthopedic patients, and this new technology provides high quality and improved convenience for our patients. It is important for us here at Baystate Mary Lane to provide the latest technology to better serve our patients locally.

“The new system is designed to facilitate minimally invasive surgery through the latest instrumentation and optimized surgical techniques,” Wallace continued. “It allows for a smaller incision, is designed to address stable and non-stable fractures, has an option for the younger or smaller patient where bone removal is a concern, and can mean immediate weight-bearing for the patient, thus a faster recovery time.”

Paul Scully, president of Country Bank, got a first-hand look at the Gamma Nail System in the hospital’s Surgical Services department, which claims to offer high quality, superior durability, and faster recovery time.

In recent years, donations made by Country Bank to Mary Lane have aided the hospital in purchasing modern equipment in mammography and X-ray, a fetal monitoring system in the Women and Infant’s Unit, and new technology for the treatment of heartburn in the hospital’s Surgical Services Department, as well as assisting the hospital in the total renovation and upgrade of that department.

“Baystate Mary Lane Hospital, year after year, benefits from the outpouring of support made by local businesses, such as Country Bank,” said Shirtcliff. “With the support of local businesses and the community in general, the hospital can continue to provide the best in care and best in technology for all our patients.”

Said Scully, “we are proud to support a number of groups and organizations right here in our own backyard. Baystate Mary Lane Hospital is a special place for us here at the bank and for the community as a whole, because of the exceptional care they provide, and their continuous efforts to provide high technology for their patients.”
