Berkshire and Fairview Recognized for Cardiac Care

PITTSFIELD — The American Heart Assoc. and American Stroke Assoc. are recognizing Berkshire Medical Center for its performance in treating cardiac and stroke patients and Fairview Hospital for its performance in treating cardiac patients, using the association’s Get with the Guidelines – SM program.

BMC is one of only four hospitals in the U.S. to achieve Triple Gold recognition, for two or more consecutive years of sustained adherence to all three performance measures: coronary artery disease, heart failure, and stroke.

BMC has been recognized with seven consecutive Performance Achievement awards for outstanding performance in the care of patients with coronary artery disease, and is the only hospital in the nation so honored seven years running. BMC is also the only hospital in the U.S. to be honored with four consecutive Performance Achievement awards for outstanding care of stroke patients and three Performance Achievement awards in a row for care of patients with heart failure.

Fairview Hospital has achieved Gold Recognition for sustained performance of two years or more in all performance measures related to coronary artery disease.

BMC and Fairview joined 518 other hospitals featured in an advertisement in the recent “America’s Best Hospitals” issue of U.S. News & World Report. BMC is featured on the first page of the five-page ad, along with three other hospitals, for its Triple Gold Recognition.

“Berkshire Medical Center leads nationally with more Performance Achievement Awards than any other hospital in our program,” said Michael Weamer, executive vice president of the AHA.

GWTG is a hospital-based quality-improvement program designed to ensure that hospitals consistently care for cardiac and stroke patients following the most up-to-date guidelines and recommendations. The program provides three modules that address coronary artery disease, heart failure, and stroke. Currently more than 1,450 hospitals use one or more GWTG modules.

Upon meeting each module’s criteria, hospitals are recognized if at least 85{06cf2b9696b159f874511d23dbc893eb1ac83014175ed30550cfff22781411e5} of their cardiac or stroke patients are treated and discharged according to American Heart Assoc. and American Stroke Assoc. recommendations. “The AHA is pleased to recognize its top Get with the Guidelines participants,” said Dr. Gregg Fonarow, chairman of the GWTG steering committee and director of the Ahmanson-UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center.

“The program makes it easier for hospitals like Berkshire Medical Center and Fairview Hospital to provide appropriate evidence-based care and ultimately improve the quality of life and help reduce the number of deaths in these heart and stroke patients.”
