Mercy Medical Center To Open Wound-care Facility In January

SPRINGFIELD — On Jan. 3, Mercy Medical Center will open a highly specialized facility for treating patients with chronic non-healing wounds.

The Wound Care Center® at Mercy Medical Center treats wounds that have not responded to traditional wound-care methods. The Center also will offer educational programs for chronic wound patients, their families and caregivers.

“This service will be critical to help patients regain a better quality of life,” said Dr. James E. Fanale, chief operating officer at Mercy Medical Center and chief medical officer for Sisters of Providence Health System.

The co-medical directors for the Wound Care Center at Mercy will be Dr. Robert Goodman and Dr. Jeffrey Kaufman. In addition, Dr. Chanel Bouchereau will provide care there. All are vascular surgeons. Drs. Christopher Peteros, James Courniotes, William Axton, Frank Mole’, and John Vomero, all podiatrists, will also attend clinic sessions in the Center.

The Wound Care Center services are designed to complement physicians’ services and provide a cost-effective, outcome-oriented wound-healing approach. Physicians refer patients to the Wound Care Center for comprehensive wound management, but continue to treat the underlying condition and provide for the patient’s overall care.

Types of wounds that can benefit from the Wound Care Center’s therapies include diabetic foot ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, pressure sores and wounds resulting from traumatic injury or incisional breakdown.

The center offers coordinated and comprehensive wound-care management, using advanced wound-care techniques. State-of-the-art wound assessment, testing, and treatment are provided by a team of health care professionals with specialized training and expertise in wound healing.

The establishment of a Wound Care Center at Mercy Medical Center builds on the hospital’s existing strengths in the area of wound care. The center’s staff will work closely with patients, emphasizing patient education and supporting patients to ensure compliance with treatment protocols. Administrative staff will work closely with each patient to address reimbursement issues as they relate to their wound treatment.
