Newton Named Chair Of SPHS Trustees

SPRINGFIELD — Carla W. Newton, Esq., has been elected chair of the board of trustees of the Sisters of Providence Health System.

 

Newton is an attorney specializing in family law. She is a partner in the law firm Robinson, Donovan and Madden and Barry P.C. in Springfield. Newton has been a member of the SPHS Board since 1996 and served as vice chair from 1997 through March 2005. She has also served on the Mercy Medical Center Board since 1990.

Newton took over the chairmanship from Dennis A. Fitzpatrick, president of O’Connell Companies Inc. in Holyoke, who served as board chair from 2001 to 2005. Fitzpatrick served SPHS a total of nine years Fitzpatick continues his service to SPHS by now serving on the Mercy Medical Center board of trustees.
Officers of the SPHS board are: Vincent J. McCorkle, president and chief executive officer, Sisters of Providence Health System; John E. Dowd, vice president of Dowd Insurance in Holyoke, vice chair and Robert M. Sullivan, Jr., president of RM Sullivan Transportation, Springfield, secretary.

New members of the SPHS board are Joanne M. Beauregard, controller, O’Connell Development Group Inc., of Holyoke and Rev. Karen L. Rucks of Springfield. Other members are: Teresa A. Burr, dean of liberal arts transfer and general studies at Springfield Technical Community College; William A. Collins, president of Collins Electric in Springfield; David W. Glidden, regional president of TD Banknorth, in Springfield; John E. Griggs, M.D.; Sr. Mary E. Horgan, SP, vice president, Sisters of Providence, Holyoke; R. Peter Landon, chief financial officer, Sisters of Providence Inc., Holyoke; Almaneta G. Lee, Charge nurse/staff nurse at Western Massachusetts Hospital in Westfield; Sr. Ruth F. McGoldrick, SP, Sister of Providence; Steven M. Mitus, chief financial officer, Balise Motor Sales, West Springfield; Sr. Joan C. Mullen, president, Sisters of Providence, Holyoke; and Kent B. Smith of Longmeadow, Associate Justice, Appeals Court, Boston. James E. Fanale, M.D., chief operating officer at Mercy Medical Center and senior vice president of medical services for SPHS, serves as assistant secretary to the board of trustees. Robert DeVey, chief financial officer, SPHS, serves as treasurer and Thomas Robert, director of accounting and treasury, SPHS, serves as the board’s assistant treasurer.
