AIC Program Chartered into Nursing Honor Society

SPRINGFIELD — In a historic chartering ceremony, the American International College Nursing Honor Society was chartered into the Beta Zeta at Large Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau International.

The ceremony was held on May 6, at the Veritas Auditorium, Elms College, and was presided over by Dr. Alyce Schultz, Vice-President of Sigma Theta Tau International. The event is the direct result of several years of collaboration by members of Beta Zeta at Large Chapter and American International College.

Leading the effort was Chapter President Jan Pastuzak and Ann Glanovsky, dean of the School of Nursing at AIC. The Beta Zeta chapter was installed in 1972 at the UMass Amherst. Elms College, Lambda Xi Chapter merged with Beta Zeta in 2003 to form the Beta Zeta-at-Large Chapter.

This addition of the AIC Nursing Honor Society to Beta Zeta at Large will foster efforts of area nurses to fulfill the mission of Sigma Theta Tau International, which is “to improve the health of people worldwide through leadership and scholarship in practice, education and research.”

Founded in 1922, the honor society currently has 125,000 active members in more than 90 countries with 433 chapters located at 512 institutions of higher education throughout the United Stats, as well as in Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, the Netherlands, Pakistan, South Africa, Swaziland, Taiwan, and Tanzania.

Officers inducted were president, Kathleen Scoble of Sturbridge, currently the director of the nursing program at Elms College; vice president, representing American International College, Donna Polverini of Longmeadow; secretary, Cindy Gaudet of Southampton; counselor representing UMass Amherst, Pat Kent of Salem; and counselor representing AIC, Karen Rousseau of Chicopee.

Also several area nurses will be inducted as community nurse leaders.
