Baystate Children’s Hospital Debuts Newly Renovated Play Deck
SPRINGFIELD — Baystate Children’s Hospital debuted its newly renovated Play Deck, a vibrant indoor and outdoor therapeutic play space that reflects Baystate Health’s mission to deliver compassionate, quality, and accessible care while advancing the health of local communities.
Baystate Health recognizes that healing extends beyond clinical treatment. The redesigned Play Deck, located on the Children’s and Adolescents Unit (CHAD) at Baystate Medical Center, reinforces Baystate Children’s Hospital’s commitment to play as an essential component of pediatric care, supporting the physical, emotional, and developmental well-being of patients from birth through age 22.
The renovations build upon the original 2014 Play Deck project and ensure the space continues to offer state-of-the-art therapeutic experiences in a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment.
A focal point of the updated indoor Play Deck is a floor-to-ceiling immersive mural featuring three-dimensional and lighted elements. The mural sets the tone for the space, including a neon crescent moon displaying the word ‘imagine,’ symbolizing hope, resilience, and possibility. The floor design mirrors a pathway extending from a tree within the mural, guiding patients through vibrant color zones representing elements of the landscape — grass, water, and sky.
The latest round of renovations was made possible through the support of the Baystate Children’s Hospital Golf Tournament and additional support from Country Bank, demonstrating the strength of community partnerships that help advance health and healing for children and families across the region.
