Baystate Health Appoints Abdul Al Hamamsy Vice President, Chief Risk Officer
SPRINGFIELD — Baystate Health has appointed Abdul Al Hamamsy vice president and chief risk officer, effective Oct. 20.
In this role, Al Hamamsy will lead Baystate Health’s enterprise risk management and insurance operations, including clinical risk management, corporate and captive insurance programs, and claims and loss management.
“Abdul’s remarkable blend of legal, medical, and leadership expertise will be instrumental in strengthening Baystate Health’s culture of safety, quality, and accountability,” said Kathleen Healy, chief legal officer for Baystate Health. “His proven track record in risk management and his commitment to transparency and safety make him an outstanding addition to our leadership team.”
Al Hamamsy brings more than 25 years of healthcare experience, including leadership in risk management, claims, and insurance. He is known for his expertise in enterprise risk and claims strategy, developing and implementing communication and resolution programs (CRPs), and collaborating on innovative approaches to safety and learning.
He joins Baystate Health from the University of Kansas Health System, where he directed risk and insurance operations and co-led the creation of two high-performing captive insurance companies. He also previously held senior leadership roles at the Risk Authority, Stanford Health Care’s captive insurance company, where he developed an industry-leading CRP, the Process for Early Assessment, Resolution, and Learning.
A certified professional coach and Just Culture trainer, Al Hamamsy is deeply committed to advancing collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within healthcare organizations. He holds a juris doctorate from Santa Clara University School of Law, a master of public health degree in health administration and policy from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery degrees from Cairo University Faculty of Medicine.
