Baystate Health’s Dr. Seth Gemme Recognized as One of Modern Healthcare’s 40 Under 40

SPRINGFIELD — Baystate Health announced that Dr. Seth Gemme, chair and associate professor of the Department of Emergency Medicine, was recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of its 40 Under 40 for 2025. The profiles of all the honorees are featured in the Feb. 10, 2025 issue of the magazine and online at modernhealthcare.com/40under40.

This program recognizes the healthcare industry’s rising stars age 40 and under who contribute to a culture of innovation and help their organizations achieve and exceed financial, operational, and clinical goals.

“Whether it is working in an emergency department, behind the scenes developing smart AI tools, or in so many of the other roles needed in healthcare today, the 2025 class of 40 Under 40 demonstrate a dedication to improving their organizations, the industry, and access to medical care,” said Mary Ellen Podmolik, editor-in-chief of Modern Healthcare. “Our honorees already are role models blazing trails, and we look forward to seeing their career journeys progress in healthcare.”

The recognition highlights Gemme’s leadership and innovation, which have improved clinical efficiency and access to Baystate’s emergency care. He has developed several homegrown strategies that result in measurably shorter ER wait times and reductions in patient walkouts. These include the ‘vertical model,’ which segments patients based on acuity and complaint to expedite care, and the Global Emergency Medicine Metric Evaluation (GEMME) tool, which has been submitted for a provisional patent early in 2024. The GEMME tool drove a newly developed, hospital-wide code capacity policy, meant to decompress ED in times of increased capacity within 30 minutes.

“Dr. Gemme has been influential in creating an environment of outcomes-focused leadership and team accountability,” said Dr. Adrianne Seiler, clinical chief officer at Baystate Health. “With this approach, teams focus on improving hospital access through our hospital’s ‘front door’ of the Emergency Department. Dr. Gemme’s leadership guided broad solutioning to support our goal of all patients being cared for in a safe and timely manner.”

Gemme was also honored by BusinessWest in its 40 Under Forty class of 2023.
