Baystate Mary Lane Launches New Digestive Health Program

WARE – Baystate Mary Lane Hospital’s Surgical Services Department has launched a new digestive health program to support patients with digestive health disorders.

“Our new Digestive Health Program was designed for people who may be experiencing a wide range of digestive problems, from difficulty swallowing to intestinal problems and other conditions of the digestive tract,” said Pam Wallace RN, manager of the Surgical Services Department at BMLH.

“The Digestive Health Program, which has been enhanced through technology, expertise and service aspects, encompasses an array of GI-related services, including specialist consultation visits, diagnostic procedures, medical and surgical treatments, support groups, nutrition services, and coordinated referrals,” said Wallace.

Conditions that the specialists in the Digestive Health Program can diagnose and treat include colon polyps, inflammatory bowel diseases, colonic bleeding, acid reflux, and severe heartburn, Barrett’s Esophagus, difficulty in swallowing, celiac disease, upper gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, chronic hepatitis, and cirrhosis.

creenings for colon cancer are also offered, and are recommended for men and women beginning at age 50, and earlier for those with family history.

The physicians participating in the Digestive Health Program are Gastroenterologists, Dr. Farhad Navab and Dr. T.K. Thomas; and Surgeon, Dr. David Reynolds.

“We consider our Program at Baystate Mary Lane Hospital unique in that it combines surgery with counseling, nutritional services, and other treatment options to provide the most appropriate care for each patient,” said Wallace.

The BMLH Surgical Services department offers GI endoscopic procedures, surgical procedures, and pain management.

The Surgical Services Department features a same-day care area, two digestive health-surgical procedure rooms, two full-service operating rooms as well as a sterile processing department. The post-anesthesia-care area features four beds.
