Communication Group Launched for People with Memory Change, Care Partners
EASTHAMPTON — The Easthampton Council on Aging (ECOA), in partnership with the Easthampton Public Library, is offering a new, creative, social communication program for people ages 55 and up with memory changes and adults caring for someone age 55 or older.
Two speech pathologists, Elizabeth Martin and Abigail Knopp, will offer participants education and practice with strategies for improving communication, support to identify and create a story in a chosen medium, and opportunities for social connection over refreshments. The program, offered free of charge, runs for eight weeks beginning in March at the library’s annex and is funded by the Council on Aging with in-kind support from the library.
Both providers have extensive experience working with individuals with memory loss and their family members. Martin owns Neuro Speech Services and offers holistic, person-centered therapy for adults with cognitive-communication disorders. She is an instructor at UMass Amherst.
“We know social interaction is an important part of healthy aging,” she said. “The intention with this group is to create a judgment-free space for care partners and individuals with any level of memory loss to connect and communicate, while also having the opportunity to explore various creative mediums such as drawing, painting, writing, or digital storytelling.”
Knopp offers home- and community-based services in her private practice, Mill River Speech & Wellness; provides services at nursing homes; and is a poet and writer who facilitates creative activities.
“When people have big health changes, their relationships often change as well. Family and friends inhabit caregiving roles. Many have difficulty finding time to slow down and adjust, and ways to socialize,” she said. “We want to offer strategies and create a space where people can connect over shared experiences.”
Advance sign-up is required for each week. Participants are encouraged but not required to commit to all eight weeks. Contact ECOA at signmeup@easthamptonma.gov; (413) 527-6151, ext. 139; or 19 Union St., Easthampton. Rides are available for city residents.
