Dakin Humane Society Discounting Adoption Fees by 50% Through Sept. 28

SPRINGFIELD — Dakin Humane Society is reducing adoption fees by 50% for all available pets now through Saturday, Sept. 28. The shelter has dogs, kittens, cats, and a variety of small animals, including guinea pigs, birds, ferrets, and rabbits, eligible for adoption at this time.

“Summer is typically the time of year when our animal population hits a peak,” Executive Director Meg Talbert said. “And although the calendar says summer is over, we still have many pets looking for a person or family seeking a great new companion.”

Dakin, located at 171 Union St. in Springfield, is open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12:30 to 3 p.m. In-person visits are the quickest way to adopt a pet, as the organization recently discontinued its online adoption application process. If people have questions about a particular animal, they may contact Dakin at (413) 781-4000, ext. 1, or email springfield@dakinhumane.org.

The adoption fee for cats or dogs at Dakin includes spay/neuter surgery, veterinary examination, all age-appropriate vaccinations, microchip and registration, and deworming treatment. Additionally, cats receive tests for feline leukemia and FIV, while dogs receive flea and tick treatment and a heartworm test and prevention. Adopters of all pets from Dakin have access to behavioral support from staff members.
