Relief for Haiti

The medical staff of Holyoke Medical Center has donated $10,000 to the relief efforts in Haiti. Dr. Vijay Gandevia (left), president of the medical staff, and the hospital’s medical executive committee announced that Partners in Health, an international health care organization based in Boston, had been chosen to be the recipient of this donation. PIH works in 12 countries to deliver high-quality health care and break the cycle of disease and poverty. It has been providing vital health services in Haiti for more than 20 years and is one of the largest health care providers in the country. Dr. Thomas Gould (right), a pathologist, initially proposed the donation to his colleagues on the medical staff. “For those of us who couldn’t be there ourselves to help these people who have so little,” he said, “this is our way of trying to assist the best we can.”

Above and Beyond

Several members from Holyoke Medical Center recently received awards of appreciation from Employer Support of Guard and Reserve (ESGR). These awards were given for the support shown to Dr. Martin Lesser while he recently attended boot camp. The medical center ‘loaned’ Dr. Garry Bombardier to Lesser’s office in order to keep his physician practice running. Bombardier will resume that role when Lesser is deployed this fall. Pictured, from left, are ESGR volunteer Diane Swain, Captain Jeffrey Cox, HMC President Hank Porten, Bombardier, HMC Director of Physician Group Practices Kevin Neill, ESGR Western Mass. Chairman Earl Bonett, Office Manager Kelly Hebert, and Lesser.

Caring Conversations

Jewish Geriatric Services (JGS) recently offered information about advance health care planning — including living wills, health care proxies, and advanced directives — to community members and JGS employees as part of the third annual National Healthcare Decisions Day. Social worker Jodi DiTusa (right) offered a ‘Caring Conversations’ seminar at the Richard Salters Storrs Library in Longmeadow. She presented tips on how to start those difficult conversations with loved ones and physicians. From left, Longmeadow residents Bernard Milstein, Selma Milstein, Philip Harris, and Barbara Fitzgerald were some of those present to speak with with DiTusa about making informed decisions.
