Second Chance Animal Services Celebrates 80,000th Spay/Neuter Surgery

SPRINGFIELD — Second Chance Animal Services announced a significant milestone: 80,000 spay/neuter surgeries performed, an achievement that coincides with the organization’s 25th anniversary.

Mable Henderson, a female 16-week-old basset hound, had the honor of being the 80,000th patient when she received her spay surgery at Second Chance’s community veterinary hospital in Springfield.

“Reaching 80,000 spay/neuter surgeries is a remarkable accomplishment for us,” said Sheryl Blancato, founder and CEO of Second Chance. “It’s not just about preventing unwanted litters; it’s also about ensuring the health and happiness of our pets. Spaying and neutering can significantly reduce the risk of certain health issues, such as life-threatening infections and reproductive cancers, ultimately leading to a longer, healthier life for pets.”

Second Chance’s Springfield location recently expanded its spay/neuter surgery schedule, enabling the hospital to meet the overwhelming demand. The organization began its low-cost program in 2005 at its East Brookfield shelter, aiming to address the root causes of pet homelessness. Today, the nonprofit’s hospitals in North Brookfield, Southbridge, Springfield, and Worcester continue to provide spay/neuter services to hundreds of pets each month. All Second Chance hospitals offer comprehensive veterinary care, and for those in need, subsidized rates ensure that every pet receives the necessary attention and treatment they deserve.
