Shriners Children’s New England Welcomes Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Elizabeth Bizier
SPRINGFIELD — Shriners Children’s New England recently welcomed orthopedic surgeon Dr. Elizabeth “Libby” Bizier as a new member of its medical staff. Bizier is a board-certified pediatric orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the treatment of children with limb and gait differences, as well as movement disorders. She is currently accepting new patients.
Bizier graduated from the University of Maine before serving in the U.S. Air Force, flying jets and completing more than 50 missions during Operation Desert Storm. After her distinguished military service, she earned her medical degree at Indiana University’s School of Medicine. She completed her orthopedic surgery internship and residency at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and fellowships at Brown University and Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
She completed an orthopedic surgery residency rotation at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, noting, “that’s when I fell in love with pediatrics.” She eventually joined the surgical staff at Connecticut Children’s before being named medical director of the Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota trauma program. She also served on the medical staff at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare and Shriners Children’s Twin Cities, both in Minnesota, prior to joining the Shriners Children’s New England team.
For the past 15 years, Bizier has traveled to Guatemala on a yearly mission trip she co-founded to treat children with orthopedic needs. She is also passionate about serving children with congenital and neurological conditions, particularly those with Down syndrome, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy, a neuromuscular condition that affects movement and muscle development.
“My priority is the mission of treating children,” she said. “Changing their lives makes me joyful. My work at Shriners Children’s defines those values, and it is a culture I find very rewarding.”
Bizier also plays an integral role in the Shriners Children’s New England Motion Analysis Center, assessing gait differences in children and recommending treatment options in collaboration with rehabilitation therapy and pediatric orthotic and prosthetic services.
