Surgical Oncologist Joins Baystate’s Cancer Program
SPRINGFIELD – Baystate Health recently announced the addition of Francis Cannizzo Jr., MD, PhD, to the surgical oncology division of Baystate Surgical Associates.
Cannizzo earned a medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine, and a doctorate in pathology, nutrition and cancer from Boston University. He completed a residency in general surgery at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn and a fellowship in surgical oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y.
Cannizzo joins Drs. Richard Arenas, Holly Mason and Richard Wait in the Division of Surgical Oncology at Baystate Medical Center in their efforts to provide highly specialized surgical care within the Baystate Regional Cancer Program. Cannizzo brings to the program his surgical expertise in cancer care with special interests in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary cancers, melanoma, and soft tissue sarcomas.
Cannizzo is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Clinical Investigations. He conducts research by understanding how hepatobiliary tumors develop and are affected by local treatments such as radiofrequency ablation. He has additional interests in nutrition and its affect on cancer development and growth.
