Wellpoint Honors Springfield Police Officer Nestor Santos as Hometown Hero

SPRINGFIELD — Wellpoint, a health-benefits company in Massachusetts, recognized Officer Nestor Santos of the Springfield Police Department as an honoree in its Hometown Heroes program. In partnership with 98.5 the Sports Hub Bruins Radio Network, this initiative celebrates the invaluable contributions of local first responders, teachers, military personnel, and other individuals in public service across Massachusetts, shining a spotlight on the everyday acts of courage and kindness that strengthen local communities.

While responding to a crime last June, Santos was shot in the face and leg in the line of duty, losing vision in his eye. A recipient of the Medal of Valor, the department’s highest honor, Santos’ strength in the face of adversity makes him a symbol of heroism and inspiration for all.

“Wellpoint is honored to recognize Officer Nestor Santos of the Springfield Police Department as a Hometown Hero. His courage and selflessness serve as a powerful reminder of the vital role first responders play in safeguarding our communities,” said David Morales, general manager of Wellpoint. “We celebrate his heroism, and through him, we thank all the brave men and women of the police force who serve and protect our communities.”

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno added that “Nestor Santos is a dedicated, decorated, and truly brave police officer. He is the definition of a hero who demonstrates his commitment to serving and protecting our community. Even after being seriously injured in a tragic incident, he wanted to recover as quickly as possible so he could get back out on the force and serve our community. He is a genuinely good person, a great family man and dad, who deserves this recognition.”

Hometown Heroes program honorees score a pair of tickets to a Boston Bruins game and are recognized on 98.5 the Sports Hub Bruins Radio Network.
