Wing Announces Initiatives Aimed at Reducing Costs

PALMER — Leaders from Wing Memorial Hospital & Medical Centers, based in Palmer, recently announced that the organization is taking action to adjust its operations and staffing in response to declining volumes and reimbursements, as it works to become more affordable for its patients while continuing its focus on quality care and enhancing the patient experience.
Over the last half of the fiscal year, the hospital has experienced a significant decline in volumes, which has been exacerbated by a serious shortage of primary-care physicians. Wing Memorial Hospital ended the fiscal year $1.2 million behind projections, and in order to maintain financial sustainability, steps needed to be taken to rightsize the organization.
Wing recently completed staff reductions and hour reductions affecting a total of 54 employees; 16 current jobs were eliminated, and 38 employees had their hours reduced.
Wing Memorial Hospital is a member of UMass Memorial Health Care, which last week announced a projected operating loss of approximately $57 million for FY13 and plans to correct the operating losses in fiscal 2014 and beyond.
Wing Memorial is confident that the action taken is necessary to maintain its financial health and to continue to provide high-quality, safe care to patients and the community.
