WMASS Mother’s Day Half Marathon Slated for May 12
WHATELY — The WMASS Mother’s Day Half Marathon, a benefit for Cancer Connection, returns to Whately and Hatfield for its ninth year on Sunday, May 12. The race, with many runners and walkers participating in honor of their mothers and other family members and friends, raises funds for Cancer Connection’s free, non-medical services for people facing cancer, and their families and caregivers, in Western Mass.
“Every year this race gets better and better, and this year is set to do that as well,” said Sue Monahan, race director. “We’ve added a free beer for every runner at the finish, and runners love beer. Having run many races myself, this race amazes me with its super, unique vibe — everyone is so happy and grateful, from participants to volunteers.”
Last year, the WMASS race raised $58,344 after race expenses, with 100% of those proceeds going to fund Cancer Connection’s free services. This year, at least 500 runners and walkers are expected, and more than 60 are raising funds.
Cancer Connection is a nonprofit cancer-support center that has served as a haven for people diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers in the Pioneer Valley since 2000. All programs and services are offered free of charge, including guidance along the cancer journey from diagnosis through treatment and beyond, integrative therapies, support groups, educational workshops, and programs to build physical and emotional strength.
The first 600 runners and walkers will receive a free race shirt and medal. Race information and registration at www.racewmass.com will be available through Saturday, May 11, and participants can register at the event.
Parking will be provided by the Yankee Candle Co. manufacturing plant on Christian Lane in Whately. For more information, call Cancer Connection at (413) 586-1642.
