AIC Introduces Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Systems Administration

SPRINGFIELD — American International College (AIC) is launching a new bachelor of science degree in health systems administration (HSA), developed to prepare students for careers in healthcare management. Offered through the School of Health Sciences, the program responds to a growing need for professionals equipped to manage healthcare organizations and improve health outcomes.

The new HSA degree replaces AIC’s former healthcare management program, reflecting both the expanding scope of the field and the evolving demands of the healthcare industry. Designed with input from public health professionals and healthcare employers, the program emphasizes the skills needed to support efficient healthcare delivery, navigate health policies, and promote community well-being.

“As healthcare systems become more complex and the focus on health equity and outcomes intensifies, there is an urgent need for leaders who understand both operational management and public health,” said Associate Professor Frederick Hooven, director of the college’s public health program. “Our health systems administration program prepares students to meet that need.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical and health services managers is projected to grow 28% through 2031, far outpacing the national average for all occupations. This growth is driven by an aging population, advancements in technology, and the evolving landscape of healthcare regulations.

Graduates of the HSA program will be prepared for entry-level leadership positions in hospitals, integrated health systems, nonprofit health organizations, insurance companies, long-term care facilities, and local and state public health agencies. The program offers a blend of coursework in healthcare administration and public health, equipping students with the knowledge to address disparities, lead quality improvement efforts, and support public health initiatives within diverse healthcare environments.

Among the objectives of the program is developing a strong understanding of how social, environmental, and economic factors influence population health. Another key learning outcome is gaining in-depth knowledge of the structure and function of healthcare systems across both the public and private sectors. Students will gain practical experience through internships with healthcare and public health partners across the region, preparing graduates for seamless entry into the workforce.

The addition of the health systems administration program aims to strengthen AIC’s role as a regional leader in health sciences education and reflects the college’s focus on preparing students for today’s workforce. Enrollment is now open for fall 2025. Click here for more information.
