Baystate Health Now Serving Pierce Bros Coffee

SPRINGFIELD — Baystate Health patients, guests, and team members are now enjoying locally sourced, certified fair-trade coffee. Greenfield-based Pierce Bros Coffee Roasters coffee is now available at many Baystate facilities.

“Just as we’re committed to providing care close to home for our patients, we’re buying more and more of our products from local suppliers, too,” said Matt Perpetua, manager of Supply Chain & Commissary Operations for Baystate Medical Center’s Food and Nutrition Services. “Pierce Bros makes great coffee, and they’re based right here in our Western Massachusetts community. That supports a healthy local economy.”

Added Sean Pierce, co-owner of Pierce Bros Coffee, “it is amazing to have signed our first client in healthcare, but to be associated with Baystate Health, one of the largest healthcare operations in Western Massachusetts, is a big deal. It really shows their commitment to supporting locally owned businesses and the community.”

Baystate Health is sourcing more of its food products locally than ever before. At peak harvest times throughout the year, Baystate purchases as much as 30{06cf2b9696b159f874511d23dbc893eb1ac83014175ed30550cfff22781411e5} of its produce from local farms such as Czajkowski Farm in Hadley and others sourced through a local produce distributor. In addition to produce, approximately 20{06cf2b9696b159f874511d23dbc893eb1ac83014175ed30550cfff22781411e5} of Baystate’s milk is sourced directly from Western Mass. dairy farms, including Mapleline Farm in Hadley and Our Family Farms in Greenfield, a cooperative of area dairy farmers.

Pierce Bros “is truly a family-run business,” said co-owner Darren Pierce. “Everyone has their own little forte in the growth of Pierce Bros Gourmet Distributors, from dad delivering coffee to Sean’s wife working the payroll and even our older sister distributing the coffee in the gift baskets she sells.”
