Baystate Names New Chairman Of Pathology

SPRINGFIELD — Dr. Richard C. Friedberg, the former associate director of the Blood Bank and associate head of Transfusion Medicine at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, has been named the new chairman of the Department of Pathology at Baystate Medical Center.
A graduate of Stanford University, Friedberg received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 1988 and received a Ph.D in Coagulation Biochemistry from the Duke University Graduate School at the same time. He completed his residency in Pathology and a fellowship in Transfusion Medicine at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology, with added qualification in Blood Banking/ Transfusion Medicine.
He recently completed formal management training at Harvard.

In addition to his previous position at the University of Alabama Hospital, Friedberg was also chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at Birmingham VA Medical Center and a scientist at the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and the Center for Metabolic Bone Disease at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
