Baystate to Hold Heart and Vascular Health Lecture Series

SPRINGFIELD — Baystate Medical Center will hold its popular annual Heart and Vascular Health Lecture Series during the month of February beginning with a look at “Preventive Cardiology” on Feb. 3.

The Heart and Vascular Health Lecture Series, presented by the Baystate Heart & Vascular Program as part of American Heart Month, will focus on presentations designed to assist participants in learning how they can maintain or improve their heart and vascular health.

Non-invasive cardiologist Dr. Timothy Egan of the Heart & Vascular Program at Baystate Medical Center will present the first of four free seminars at Baystate Health’s Education Center at 361 Whitney Ave. in Holyoke. His presentation will focus on the importance of preventive screenings, medications, and treatments to help a person make the most of their heart health.

All lectures will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

The free lectures will continue with “Atrial Fibrillation: Stroke Prevention and New Treatment Strategies” on Feb. 10, featuring Dr. John Rousou, chief of Cardiac Surgery, Dr. Mathias Stoenescu, cardiac electrophysiologist, both of Baystate.

That will be followed on Feb. 17 by “Peripheral Vascular Problems Associated with Coronary Artery Disease,” presented by vascular surgeon Dr. Marc Norris of Baystate Vascular Services.

The series will conclude on Feb. 24 with “Minimally Invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement,” presented by Dr. Daniel Engelman of Baystate’s Division of Cardiac Surgery, and surgical director of its Cardiac Intensive Care Unit; and Dr. Ashequl Islam, interventional cardiologist in Baystate’s Heart & Vascular Program.

In March, Baystate Medical Center opened its MassMutual Wing housing the Davis Family Heart and Vascular Center. The new, ultra-modern center houses six surgical/endovascular suites designed to accommodate advanced, life-saving cardiovascular procedures and 32 cardiovascular critical-care rooms that support state-of-the-art medicine, and at the same time provide ample room for the comforting presence of a patient’s family and friends, known to make the patient’s experience better.

Heart-healthy light refreshments will be served at the lectures, and educational handouts on heart and vascular health will be provided. Parking is free. Registration is required for each session by calling Baystate Health Link at (800) 377-4325.

In addition, Baystate offers full HDL/LDL cholesterol screenings on the first and second Wednesdays of each month from 7:30 a.m. to 9:55 a.m. for $10 at its outpatient care facility at 3300 Main St. in Springfield.
