Greenfield Receives $199,064 Grant from Massachusetts Office on Disability

GREENFIELD — The city of Greenfield has been awarded $199,064.25 from the Massachusetts Office on Disability (MOD) Municipal Americans with Disabilities Act Grant to address priority sidewalk and ADA curb-ramp improvements identified by the Department of Public Works, the Greenfield Commission on Disability Access, and the city’s ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan.

MOD funds will be used for the replacement of sidewalks along Beacon Street and the installation of ADA-compliant detectable warning plates at two intersections, Beacon Street at North Street (two curb ramps) and Beacon Street at High Street (eight curb ramps). Construction is not yet scheduled, but the project is slated for early this summer.

“Rehabilitating sidewalks is an important step in ensuring that Greenfield is accessible for all,” Mayor Virginia Desorgher said. “I am grateful for the MOD grant and the positive impact it will have on a well-traveled area in our community.”

In Greenfield’s ADA Self Evaluation and Transition Plan, Beacon Street is designated as a “priority east-west route,” and High Street is designated a “priority north-south route.” Beacon Street runs along the north side of Baystate Franklin Medical Center and associated medical offices. It also connects to Beacon Field, a seven-acre park, as well as Blessed Trinity Parish, Beacon House Recovery Center, and several small businesses and residential homes.
