Shriners Hospital to Unveil Pediatric Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit

SPRINGFIELD — Shriners Hospitals for Children – Springfield will celebrate the opening of its new, 20-bed Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit with a ribbon-cutting ceremony today, July 6 at 10 a.m. Joining in the celebration will be many of the donors who collectively contributed $1,250,000 to the hospital’s capital campaign to open the only pediatric inpatient rehabilitation unit in Western Mass.

“We are extremely grateful to our many donors who generously supported this campaign, which will enable children in Western Massachusetts to receive inpatient rehabilitative care much closer to home,” said Karen Motyka, director of Donor Development.

Added Sheryl Moriarty, program director of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, “under the supervision of a fellowship-trained pediatric physiatrist, patients admitted to our new, family-centered inpatient rehabilitation unit will receive a minimum of 15 hours of combined physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy per week. Using an individualized, developmental, and age-appropriate program model, our Inpatient Rehabilitation team will manage medically stable children and adolescents with a variety of life-altering and complex medical conditions.”
