Baystate Franklin Medical Center’s Main Laboratory Accredited

GREENFIELD — Baystate Franklin Medical Center’s main laboratory and the arterial blood gas laboratory in the hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Department have both been awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Committee at the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent onsite inspection.

The laboratory’s medical director, Dr. Mary Zakhary, was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided. Baystate Franklin Medical Center’s labs are two of more than 7,000 CAP-accredited laboratories worldwide.

During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. Inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, as well as the lab’s equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management of the laboratory. The stringent inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients.

“I am pleased to have received accreditation again, and I congratulate the whole team here and in the blood gas lab for their efforts to continually meet the strict standards CAP sets up,” Zachary said. “I have confidence in our team’s commitment to meeting or exceeding the requirements of CAP. We strive to constantly maintain the highest standard of care here, and are proud of our excellent record.”
