HCS Head Start Highlights Importance of Early Childhood Mental Wellness
SPRINGFIELD — Holyoke, Chicopee, Springfield (HCS) Head Start is recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month by reinforcing the critical role mental wellness plays in a child’s overall development and long-term success.
At HCS Head Start, mental wellness is not a concept reserved for discussion. It is something children experience every day through intentional practices, supportive environments, and meaningful relationships. From learning how to name their feelings to practicing calming strategies and building positive relationships, children are supported in developing the social and emotional skills that help them feel safe, confident, and ready to learn.
The organization’s approach is rooted in its commitment to supporting the whole child. This includes emotional, social, and developmental well-being alongside academic growth. When children feel emotionally secure, they are better able to focus, engage, and succeed in the classroom and beyond. Early childhood is a foundational time, and building strong mental wellness skills during these years helps set the stage for lifelong resilience and healthy relationships.
“Our children are our future, and supporting their mental wellness is a shared responsibility,” CEO Nicole Blais said. “The earlier we begin, the stronger the foundation we create for lifelong growth and success.”
HCS Head Start also recognizes that children thrive when families are supported. Through strong partnerships with families, the organization provides access to resources, education, and ongoing communication around mental health and wellness. This includes connecting families to community-based services, offering workshops and training opportunities, and fostering trusting relationships between staff and families.
“In today’s environment, many families face increased stress related to financial pressures, relationship challenges, and the demands of daily life,” Blais said. HCS Head Start works to ensure families do not navigate these challenges alone by providing guidance, encouragement, and connections to additional support systems wherever possible.
Mental wellness at HCS Head Start is supported through both structured programs and everyday practices. Consistent routines help children feel safe and secure, while social-emotional learning tools and peer interactions build confidence and connection. These efforts are further strengthened by the expertise of an internal mental health team dedicated to supporting both children and staff.
The impact of this work is clear. Children who receive early mental wellness support are better able to manage frustration, recover from challenges, express their needs, and build strong relationships. These skills contribute to improved focus, learning, and overall confidence.
As Mental Health Awareness Month continues, HCS Head Start encourages the community to recognize that mental health is an essential part of overall health. Supporting emotional well-being early and consistently helps reduce stigma, strengthen families, and build healthier communities.
