Alianza Launches Cider Donut Dash to Support Domestic Violence Survivors

HOLYOKE — On any given day in Massachusetts, 73% of requests for emergency shelter from domestic violence survivors go unmet as programs simply lack the funding and capacity to meet demand.

To help close that gap, Alianza DV Services is launching its inaugural Alianza 5K: Cider Donut Dash on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 10 a.m., inviting the community to Ashley Reservoir in Holyoke to raise funds and stand with survivors.

Held just before the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the family-friendly run and walk aims to raise critical funds while reminding the community that domestic violence affects people of every age, neighborhood, race, culture, and socioeconomic background.

“Domestic violence isn’t something that only happens when it’s on the evening news,” said Carmen Nieves, executive director of Alianza DV Services. “Every single day, people in our community are living with fear, trying to decide whether it’s safe to ask for help. We want survivors to know they are not alone, and we want our community to know they can be part of the solution.”

Since its founding in 1980, Alianza (formerly Womanshelter/Compañeras) has sheltered more than 10,000 women and children and assisted more than 22,000 individuals through community-based support programs. Last year alone, nearly 3,000 people called Alianza’s 24-hour, bilingual emergency hotline seeking safety planning, emergency shelter, and support. Yet the need continues to outpace available resources.

The Cider Donut Dash represents more than a fundraising event. It is an opportunity for the community to demonstrate that survivors are seen, believed, and supported.

“This is Alianza’s first major fundraising event in several years, and we hope it becomes an annual tradition that creates lasting impacts for local survivors and families,” said Alyssa Lunghi, Alianza board president and event committee chair. “Whether you run, walk, volunteer, fundraise, sponsor, or simply come to show support, you’re helping ensure survivors in our community have somewhere to turn when they need help most.”

Participants may choose between a timed 5K run and an approximately 1.5-mile fun walk, making the event accessible for runners, walkers, families, and supporters of all ages. The morning concludes with fresh cider donuts, apple cider, and family-friendly activities. Community members and local businesses are also invited to support the event through sponsorships, fundraising, volunteering, and in-kind donations.
