North Adams Lions Club, NBSWMD Place Eyeglass Recycling Boxes at Transfer Stations

NORTH ADAMS — The North Adams Lions Club, Lions Club District 33-Y, and the Northern Berkshire Solid Waste Management District (NBSWMD) announced a new partnership to place Lions eyeglasses recycling collection boxes at all 14 transfer stations within the district. The boxes will give residents across Northern Berkshire County a convenient new way to donate used eyeglasses for reuse.

Collection boxes will be placed at transfer stations serving the towns of Adams, Cheshire, Dalton, Florida, Hancock, Hinsdale, Peru, Savoy, Williamstown, and Windsor, and town halls serving Clarksburg, Lanesborough, Monroe, and New Ashford, beginning in August, subject to change based on member town needs.

Donated eyeglasses, sunglasses, and reading glasses collected through the program will feed into the Lions Clubs’ longstanding eyeglasses recycling program, which cleans, sorts, and redistributes usable glasses to people in need around the world. The partnership pairs the Lions’ decades of experience running the collection and recycling program with NBSWMD’s existing network of transfer stations, which already serve as a trusted drop-off point for residents across the 14 member towns.

“Our transfer stations are already a place where residents in all 14 of our member towns come to do the right thing for their community and the environment,” said Linda Cernik, program director at the Northern Berkshire Solid Waste Management District. “Partnering with the Lions lets us build on that trust and give people an easy way to make sure their old eyeglasses go on to help someone else, instead of sitting in a drawer or ending up in the trash.”

Art McConnell, Lions 33-Y district governor, added that “recycling eyeglasses is one of the oldest and most effective service projects Lions Clubs International runs, and this partnership makes it easier than ever for people right here in our own district to take part. Every pair dropped off at a transfer station is a pair that can restore someone’s sight and change their life.”

Residents are encouraged to drop off used prescription eyeglasses, reading glasses, and sunglasses in good condition at a collection box during regular transfer station hours. There is no cost to participate.
