Amherst Medical Associates Welcomes New Physician

AMHERST — Dr. Joseph P. Coppola has joined the Adult Medicine practice of Dr. William Smith located at 100 University Drive in Amherst. Coppola is a member of the Cooley Dickinson Hospital medical staff.Coppola is a graduate of Berkshire School in Sheffield, Mass. and earned his B.S. in Biology from Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y. He received his doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.

He completed his internship and residency training at Millcreek Community Hospital in Erie, Penn., where he specialized in Internal Medicine. During his residency, he held the post of chief resident. He has special interests in preventative medicine, as well as urgent and acute care. In addition to his internal medicine background, Coppola also has logged over 6,000 hours of emergency medicine experience.

A West Springfield native, Coppola comes to Cooley Dickinson Hospital and to Amherst Medical Associates from positions in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Florida, where he successfully managed several internal medicine practices. Most recently, Coppola was the managing partner of Bayview Medical Associates, located in Bradenton, Fla.

He returns to Western Mass. eager to meet the medical needs of Pioneer Valley residents. “My goal for Amherst Medical Associates is to focus on general primary care that is easily accessible to the lifestyles of today’s busy families and working adults,” he says. “We are here to provide quality continuity care by appointment as well as meet more urgent needs on a walk-in/same-day appointment basis.”

Coppola and his wife, Milly, live in Belchertown with their 5-year-old son, Michael, and 18-month-old daughter, Giovanna.
